James Mattis is a retired U.S. Marine Corps general who served as the 11th Commander of United States Central Command. He was nominated as U.S. Secretary of Defense in December 2016 by President Donald Trump. James Norman Mattis was born on September 8, 1950 in Pullman, Washington. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1968 and from Central Washington State University in 1972. He’s also an alumnus of the Marine Corps University and the National War College.

CAREER
Mattis began his 43 years tenure with the United States Marine Corps in 1969. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in January 1972. As a captain he commanded a rifle and weapons company in the First Marine Brigade. As major Mattis commanded the marine’s recruiting station in Portland, Oregon. At the rank of lieutenant colonel he commanded the 1st Battalion 7th Marines during the Persian Gulf War. Mattis commanded the 7th Marine Regiment during the Afghanistan War, as colonel. As major general he led the 1st Marine Division during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

As a general Mattis served as Commander of the United States Joint Forces Command (2007-10). He also served as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander of Transformation from 2007 to 2009. Mattis was selected by President Barack Obama in 2010 to replace General David Petraeus as Commander of U.S. Central Command. He held that office from August 2010 until his retirement in 2013. Mattis was nominated as U.S. Secretary of Defense for the Trump administration in December 2016. He assumed office on January 20, 2017.
